Natural menopause
Occurs when the ovaries naturally stop their production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone and there are no menstrual periods for 12 consecutive months and no other biological or physiological cause can account for this change.
Ovaries
A pair of female reproductive organs located in the pelvis on each side of the uterus. The ovaries are connected to each other by the Fallopian tubes. Each ovary is about the size and shape of an almond. The ovaries have two functions: they produce eggs (also called ova) and hormones.
Vaginal atrophy
Thinning of the vaginal walls and decrease in vaginal lubrication that can be caused by lower levels of estrogen during menopause.
Vaginal symptoms
When associated with menopause, vaginal symptoms may include dryness, burning, and itching, and can also contribute to painful intercourse.
